Why eat kangaroo?Updated 13 days ago

It comes down to two things: kangaroo is exceptionally good for you, and eating it is genuinely good for Australia's environment. 🦘

It's some of the healthiest meat you can eat

Kangaroo is wild, naturally organic and free range. It has no feedlots, no hormones, no antibiotics. It's one of the most nutrient dense meats available: high in protein, packed with minerals and vitamins, and containing double the iron of beef. 💪

You may have heard the misconception that kangaroos are disease ridden animals. This simply isn't true. Actual rates of disease in kangaroo populations are very low. This ABC Science article breaks down the facts (scroll to the 'Health Concerns' heading).

It's better for the environment and for the kangaroos

It might sound surprising, but eating kangaroo actually helps. Indigenous Australians and early settlers relied on kangaroo as a vital source of protein. It's only recently that it fell out of fashion. With the loss of natural predators, more available pasture and less hunting pressure, kangaroo numbers have grown out of control in some areas, and this overpopulation threatens biodiversity and degrades habitat as kangaroos compete with other native species for scarce resources.

Population management also reduces suffering for the kangaroos themselves. Sadly, it's not uncommon for millions of kangaroos to starve during periods of drought. Ethical, wild harvesting means healthier ecosystems and less competition for the roos that remain, which is a shift towards eating kangaroo and helps restore populations to sustainable levels.

How we use it: our kangaroo & beef droëwors

Ever had a sausage? Droëwors is a delicious South African style of air dried sausage. It's a tender, flavourful meat stick that's an exceptional source of protein and easy to take just about anywhere. 😋

In our droëwors, we blend wild kangaroo with organic beef brisket, sliced into convenient bite sized pieces. The kangaroo keeps the protein incredibly high, while the beef brisket adds the natural fat and flavour that makes it so moreish. No sugars, no preservatives. Just real ingredients. 🙂
