Can I eat biltong while pregnant?Updated 15 days ago

We get this one a lot, and it's a fair question. Biltong is air dried rather than cooked, and the usual concern with uncooked meats during pregnancy is listeria.

Here's what we do to keep our biltong safe:

  • Rigorous meat safety standards. Our beef comes from suppliers with strong food safety processes, and every cut passes safety testing before it reaches us.
  • Vinegar curing. Every batch is cured in vinegar, which has strong natural antimicrobial properties.
  • Air drying. The slow drying process removes the moisture that bacteria need to survive.
  • Vacuum sealing. Our bags are sealed in a zero oxygen environment with an oxygen absorber inside.

That said, every pregnancy is different, and Australian food safety guidance generally recommends caution with cured and dried meats during pregnancy. We're biltong experts, not doctors so we'd always recommend having a chat with your GP, midwife or obstetrician about whether biltong fits your situation. They know you best.

If you have any questions about how our meat snacks are made or want more detail on our food safety processes, reach out anytime as we're happy to share.
